Dr. James Cole Obituary

Dr. James S. Cole, of Pinehurst, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the age of 87. He was born in Vinton, Iowa; his parents were Jess and Janet Cole. He graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine and completed his fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Seattle, Washington. He continued in academic medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Jim then had private practices in Appleton, WI, and later in Raleigh, NC until his retirement. Jim made trips to Haiti, Belarus, and Mexico, where he assisted with a variety of mission projects as well as tending to clinical needs of the local populations. After retirement, he supported community programs for the underserved in Raleigh, NC and in Bokeelia, FL. Since residing in Pinehurst, he continued these

efforts through the Tin Whistles Scholarship Foundation. Jim enjoyed outdoor sports; golf became his sport of choice, and it provided many hours of enjoyment on the courses with family and friends. He was rewarded with numerous awards and “Putter Boys” from many of the tournaments in which he participated.

Jim’s survivors include his wife, Pat; his brother, Jess (Judy); children Kelly (James) Dark, Tracey (Tom) O’Connell, Ryan (Annalyn) Cole, Doug (Maelyn) Lessard and Steve (Stacy) Lessard; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
