Alex Monroe Jr. Obituary

Alex L. Monroe, Jr (A.L./Len) left us on Friday, April 5th, 2024, unexpectedly from a major cardiac event. He was with his wife, Kasey McDonald Monroe, and his daughter, Allison Monroe Schweizer at his time of passing. Alex left behind his before-mentioned wife, Kasey, and daughter Allison as well as two sons, Greg Griffith (Tonya) of Pennsylvania and Zach Monroe of Raleigh, NC. He was also survived by two brothers, Gerald Monroe (Linda) of Aberdeen and Bruce Monroe of Southern Pines as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly.

A.L was an enthusiastic athlete and sports fan. He lettered all four years in high school football both offensively and defensively, as well as baseball both as a catcher and second baseman. He was also a two-sport (football and baseball) Division 1 athlete at East Carolina on a scholarship. After marriage, A.L went back to school and received a Master's Degree in Civil Engineering at UNCC and enjoyed a long and impressive career in environmental engineering. He was an avid amateur astronomer was active in the Charlotte Astronomy Club, and enjoyed reading and Sci-Fi until his passing.

With all of that said, A.L. considered his greatest achievement that of being a grandfather. He leaves behind two grandsons, David Griffith of Pennsylvania and Lucas Schweizer of Charlotte NC as well as two granddaughters, Chloe Schweizer and Bo Schweizer also of Charlotte NC. Although he had a residence in Southern Pines, he spent the majority of the last 9 years in Charlotte with his daughter and was a primary caregiver of his profoundly disabled grandson, Lucas with whom he had a very special bond. He had breakfast with Luke every morning and helped him get on the bus everyday. He was also often one of the last people to say goodnight to Lucas each night. He had great respect for his grandson, David's career path in education as he originally wanted to teach. He was amazed at his granddaughter, Chloe's artistic ability and piano, and found it awesome that his youngest granddaughter, Bo played the same two positions in softball as he did in baseball. He was grateful to watch them achieve their goals and loved his family well.

A.L was preceded in death by his mother and father Vesta and Len Monroe of Aberdeen, a brother, Ronnie Monroe, and two nephews Jason and Bryan.

The family would like to thank the Charlotte Firemen, the Mecklenburg County EMTs, Charlotte Police, and the doctors and nurses at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center who worked tirelessly on Alex in every effort to resuscitate him.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Crumpler Funeral Home-Aberdeen, 40229 US 1 Hwy, Aberdeen, NC.
