Col. Kenneth (Ken) Byrd (Ret.) Obituary

Col. Kenneth (Ken) Byrd (ret.) of Aberdeen passed away unexpectantly at his home at the age of 66.

Ken was born in Harrison County, MS on September 23, 1952, to Kenneth V. and Lavera Barry Byrd. After graduating from high school, he attended and graduated from The Citadel in 1974. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and served in many capacities in the United States Air Force including being the commander at Tuzla AFB, serving in Desert Storm, and working at the Pentagon. After marrying Rebecca “Becky” McArthur of Aberdeen in 1986. Upon his retirement from the U.S. Air Force, Ken and Becky moved back to Aberdeen. Even After retiring, Ken served in many supervisory and managerial capacities in many industries. Ken served on the Board of Directors for the Academy of Moore County and is a former Town of Aberdeen Commissioner. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He leaves behind his beloved wife, Becky of Aberdeen; his children; Stephen Kent Byrd of Aberdeen, Nicholas William Byrd and his wife, Kaarina of Houston, TX, Kenneth Lee Byrd and his wife, Ericka of Shreveport, LA, and Stephanie Byrd Hynes and her husband, Bart of Virginia Beach, VA; nine grandchildren, Hannah Byrd, Hayley Byrd, Isaiah Byrd, Isabella Byrd, Lilly Byrd, Kaiden Byrd, Scotty Hynes, Emily Hynes, and Aiden Byrd.

A memorial service will be held 5:00 pm on Sunday, June 30, 2019, at Turning Point Worship Center, 16433 US HWY 15 501, Aberdeen, NC 28315 with military honors following the service. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Care of the family is entrusted to Crumpler Funeral Home of Aberdeen.
